Retaining my Millennial High Potential - Role of D&I

Writer: Paritosh ShuklaParitosh Shukla

One of the biggest challenges that CHROs and CEOs are facing is retaining the high potential millennial, you wait till 11: 30 pm to interview him at a premier B School Campus, a mentor is assigned to him, a cliff ESOPs plan is given to retain him, yet he chooses to work out of Co-working space with dreams of building a Unicorn.

To retain this person, we need to understand her first, this is a person usually high on intellect, easily bored, looking for doing big things and a lot of times a misfit and a non-conformist. When she lands up in a large well run, well oiled process driven organization she is lost, she feels out of place just like our Typist friend in the Orchestra, she fumbles and this is the time the decision is made to stay or leave.

This is the time diversity and inclusion can play a big role. D&I has become a global agenda and are very misunderstood. Diversity is not just about gender, class, geography, sexual orientation or race it is also about acceptance of diverse views, ways of working, thought process, accepting the misfits, the rebels, the non conformists.

The question is can we include a small bell and a typewriter in our amazing orchestra and make it even more beautiful, we will not only make it feel inclusive and valued, we will ensure that she will unleash her magic in our workplace, rather than a startup.

Once this person feels included, rather than following, it will take charge and slowly the boundary between a leader and a follower will dissolve, the mentor will become the mentee, the organization will have new set of eyes and the synergy of experience and raw energy will unleash and we will take a step towards not just a beautiful inclusive workplace but a beautiful inclusive planet, one typewriter, one bell, one orchestra at a time….

This one comes straight from the heart , as I have been one such misfit and non conformist.

I look forward to your feedback and suggestions. Please feel free to write to us at connect@transphorm.in

WHAT PEOPLE SAY

— Prashant Gulati, Chief Sales (Retail), Dr Fixit.

The workshop ‘I am Responsible’ was a very useful initiative, that brought home to all participants, the importance of owing up responsibilities and driving execution from the front with teams. Through group exercises & Self-realization, it tried to squarely bring home the meaning of the word ‘Áccountability’ to all participants, as well as the fact that we are all capable of going much further than we ourselves believe possible. This programme should be a first step for anybody trying to drive through a change in team mindset. Definitely recommended for Managers.
